Abu Simbel was built by the Pharaoh Ramses II, also known as "the Great", in about 1300 BC, carved into the side of a mountain to honor the sun god Ra. The Abu Simbel site is now situated in an ARTIFICIAL mountain, having been moved in the early 60s because the original site was threatened by the building of the massive Aswan dam.
The statues are so huge (66 feet tall), the OBC and I had to move this far back to get them in the picture. Yes, that's me there in the foreground. Although I looked, I'm afraid there were no statues of rabbits in there. Apparently the ancient Egyptians liked cats. Go figure!
